Adaptive Coal-to-Liquids Process Modeling and Simulation

Coal-to-Liquids Process Model
Technology No. CW-08-03
The area of coal-to-liquids is gaining interest globally, and a crucial step in developing a plant is first to create a process model. The INL has developed an extensive, modular model for coal-to-liquids that can be used in pre-FEED and FEED studies and as the foundation for a CTL plant simulator. The Coal-to-Liquids Process Model allows for analyzing process options during design, provides detailed material and energy balance predictions, and can be used as input for environmental permits. The model could be licensed to build pilot-scale and commercial CTL plants. The model uses Aspen Plus and includes sub-models for cryogenic air separation, gasification and gas cleaning, CO2 separation, liquefaction, Fischer Tropsch synthesis, product upgrading and refining, the gas turbine for power production, and HRSG/steam turbine models to complete the combined cycle.
