Caldera Charge ICM: Vehicle and Supply Equipment Charging Library
Simulation platform for studying the impact of electric vehicle (EV) charging on power grids, using detailed charging models and intelligent algorithms.
Technology No. CW-22-38a
Caldera is an EV charging infrastructure simulation platform designed to study the impact of EV charging on the grid and develop strategies to manage charging. The foundation of Caldera is a library of high-fidelity EV charging models derived from extensive charging and battery testing data collected by INL over the past decade. It also contains intelligent charging algorithms for efficiently managing charging and enables co-simulation of the transportation network and the grid. The target customers are DOE and state agencies, electric utilities, universities, and private research institutions. The problem is the need for more tools to accurately represent EV charging as a load on the grid and co-simulate the transportation and grid networks. Caldera fills a technology gap by providing a versatile tool critical to answering essential questions that impact the electric grid; it's unique expertise, thanks to years of testing and gathering data on batteries, charging equipment, and EVs.
